The purpose of this new Tokyo-based development team, according to Square Enix is to work on “developing new AAA titles and bringing innovative games and other entertainment content to a global audience.” It is worth noting that while these projects haven’t been revealed yet, Luminous Productions is on a hiring binge. An interesting idea that may be pertinent to this studio and its work, as predicted by Tabata, is the belief that the next Xbox and PlayStation will offer cloud-based gaming, but that remains to be seen.

Luminous Productions (with its logo depicted below) will most likely be moving onto something new. At last year’s Gamescom, Tabata stated he wanted to work on something entirely different following Final Fantasy 15. In fact, Tabata went as far as to say, “the next project I want to do is a completely new IP. I think it’s gonna be a very large-scale project based around everything we learned and developed for Final Fantasy 15.”

Coming from the man behind the highly popular action role-playing game, this is some exciting information to be sure. The game’s popularity has even recently placed Noctis on Tekken 7’s roster. Stepping away from Final Fantasy may very well be a rough transition for Tabata, but with his new studio and old team backing him, it may definitely be an exciting move for Tabata and gamers alike.

However, some gamers may not yet be ready to leave Final Fantasy 15. After all, the recent announcement of its Windows and Royal Edition may have brought several players back to the world of Final Fantasy 15. Although once Tabata’s new project is revealed, it feels like many gamers may flock to it, so only time will tell.

Final Fantasy 15 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
