When Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker was announced at the beginning of the year, keen eyes couldn’t help but notice three familiar feminine figures hiding within the concept art revealed for one of the new dungeons coming in the expansion. During this summer’s Fan Fest, Final Fantasy 14 revealed the speculators were correct–the figures in the concept art were none other than the Magus Sisters: Mindy, Sandy, and Cindy.

The information from the Endwalker Media Tour confirmed the Magus Sisters would act as the bosses of the Tower of Zot, the first dungeon players will challenge in Endwalker. In Final Fantasy 14, the Magus Sisters are named Minduruva, Sanduruva, and Cinduruva–portmanteaus of their classic names and Dhruva, a famous king of Hindu mythology. Their names suggest a strong connection with Thavnair, the beautiful India-inspired jungle in Final Fantasy 14 where the mind-bending and flesh-warping Tower of Zot is located, though the nature of that connection is not yet known, as the dungeon was presented without any story context.

The Magus Sisters first appeared in Final Fantasy 4 as bosses found within that game’s iteration of the Tower of Zot. They also appeared in Final Fantasy 10 as summons Yuna could collect on her journey and summon in battle. The Magus Sisters in Final Fantasy 14 use magic, weapons, and abilities that fans of the series will recognize, including their ultimate technique, Delta Attack.

Final Fantasy 14 is no stranger to references to other Final Fantasy games, and it seems that Endwalker will be no exception. As the Magus Sisters would suggest, most of the references seem to be from Final Fantasy 4, like rabbitfolk on the moon, the hero’s transition from Dark Knight to Paladin, and the Tower of Zot itself, or from Final Fantasy 10, like Anima, another of Yuna’s summons Warriors of Light will have to battle in Final Fantasy 14.

However, some callbacks, like the Pandaemonium raid series, reference other or even multiple games in Final Fantasy history. Players will have to wait until Endwalker releases next month to see if the dread leviathan Sin, the moon-dwelling Luminarians, Anima’s tragic connection with the villain, or any other homages appear alongside the Magus Sisters and the Tower of Zot in Endwalker.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now on PC, PS4, and PS5. Endwalker launches on November 23.
