Last year, EA spent a lot of effort in marketing Beckham’s inclusion in FIFA 21. This comprised of renaming the standard edition of the game to Beckham Edition and offering a special card 86-rated David Beckham card to every player that launched FIFA 21 before January 15, 2021. This was in addition to his 4 different icon cards that represent various stages of his career. So, it comes as no surprise that Beckham is at the forefront of the mini story mode present in FIFA 22.

This short story, called Welcome to FIFA, starts as soon as players launch the game, but it can be skipped. It shows David Beckham having breakfast in a balcony, before moving on to interactive cutscenes that let fans create an avatar for Volta. It also includes some drills that re-introduce gameplay mechanics and ends with a full playable match of FIFA 22. Essentially, everything that players experienced when starting a new FIFA game for the first time has been put together in a mini story mode of sorts. It aims to give players a glimpse of some of the features that have been added while also letting them play around with the new gameplay mechanics.

While FIFA 20 and FIFA 21 shipped with a proper story mode inside Volta, and previous games featured The Journey, FIFA 22 will not launch with any sort of a narrative-driven campaign. Instead, EA has focused on adding features and enhancing various aspects of every game mode, including changes to Volta as well as Career Mode. It does look like improvements have been made across the board, but Ultimate Team will remain the main competitive game mode of FIFA 22.

Anyone who is subscribed to EA Play can currently play FIFA 22 for up to 10 hours, before the release of the ultimate edition on September 27. However, players have unlimited access to the FIFA 22 Web App that lets them trade players and complete squad building challenges in order to earn packs. They can also use the Web App to open Preview Packs in FIFA 22 that are refreshed every 24-hours. Players are advised to fully close the game on their console in order to stop the timer from counting down.

FIFA 22 launches on October 1 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
